When I listen to rap I pay much more attention to the production and how the MC's voice fits with it. And also I look for variation in the rhythm of their voice, etc. I'm pretty picky with rap, and a good portion of it is boring to me, so I'd maybe suggest you check out some of the albums I've been flaunting around in this thread! Experimental hip hop has gone up in my favorite genre list very quick.
