I too let Borknagar go for a few years. Quitessence was just too hard to top and their Mr. V era has been kind of boring to me, but Universal made me love them again and Winter Thrice is one of my faves this year.
black vinyl can always wait.

Yeah, same here. I like the old stuff, the newer ones are ok and so-so. This new one was a total surprise, I just checked it out of habit and curiosity, not expecting anything.

Besides some synthwave, I haven't really gotten into that much electronic music, but I can sort of get into this stuff. Has an aggressive and sinister sound to it.

Nope, the title track's pure gold.

No it's not Smile
It keeps on meandering too long especially around the (weirdly sung) chorus and ultimately misses the whole climax. One of the better ones thankfully. The singing in the closing track is just bone jarring to listen to. Why did they put Chlorophyllia last? Now the album ends in a way that I definitely don't want to spin it again.

Maybe it will sound better if you listen to the diarrhea vinyl version?

Why would one want to repeat diarrhea, haha

Edit. I do like parts of the album really, really much. Thare are just way too few of them between uninspired passages for me to enjoy the album.

Edit II. I listened to this again, and it still strikes me that what characterizes the Hero album for me (besides the strained clean vocals) is the almost complete lack of proper hooks and goddamn beautiful riffs that would lure me in for repeated listens - and the lack of climax on all songs. No matter how much I wanted to like the album, it does not deliver the goods. I really hope the next one sees them concentrating more on song structure and riffs and I'll be crawling back.

Just can't wrap my head around all the whining related to this album. The drums sound monstrous, guitar tone's smashing and the riffs are definitely there. As far as the vocals go, I think they suit the atmosphere nicely. It's a really mesmerizing listen, and I instantly felt like giving it another spin. Yeah, this definitely isn't a matter of opinion, you're Jon Snow :D

Ps. The cover art's really cool, too.
Pps. Didn't buy the diarrhea version. Die hard versions are pretty "meh" idea.

I'm really glad that many other people can appreciate the album. It's more likely then that there will be another EP or album in the coming years to redeem this for me.

I understand it's not a matter of opinion. Some things just are the way they are when you look at them objectively. Just like Melvins is the shit, but one or two people just haven't realized that yet Big Grin

Yeah. Although I'd probably rate it as one of the best albums of 2016, it's not a 10/10, like Imperiumi said. Shit, 10/10 albums don't come out every year, I regard that rating as a real classic. Exercises in Futility is probably the closest I can think of from the recent years, The Satanist and Vertikal might be close. Ok, well, those are all from consecutive years, but I'm quite on the fence with them. Still, I think "full points" type of albums don't necessarily come out every year, haven't at least seen any this year :D
