Somehow I've never been that much into straight up death metal. I mean I don't dislike it or anything and might spin some album every now and then but overall it doesn't seem to give me too much as a genre. Melodic death metal is much more to my tastes but that's an entirely different beast.

But like all genres, there are some diamond that you just have to love. Personally for me it's Repugnant's Epitome of Darkness. Pretty much a perfect album. Too bad the "ultimate" version is really hard to come by. There's this grittier, unmixed version floating in the internet I've read is the original vinyl pressing. I don't know and even if it is, original print cost a ton unfortunately.

CD sounds shit and at least newer vinyls aren't that much better (though maybe sligthly). Was quite a disappointment when I finally got the latest repress last autumn. The whole thing is just flooded with excessive echo. Guitars, singining, everything. Oh well, thank goodness from MP3 files I guess.

Sadly they disbanded way before Epitome of Darkness was ever released. Luckily I managed to see their reunion gig (or rather Mary Goore + 3) 2010 before they disbanded again. Doubt we'll see anything from them ever again. Ghost takes way too much Tobias's time and I suppose money is quite a bit better than with Repugnant as well. I like Ghost a lot as well though so it's not a complete loss.

Speaking of Sweden, what do you guys think of the representatives of what I would call new school Swedish death metal, like Tribulation and Morbus Chron? Especially Tribulation has taken things quite far and I think they've really pushed the boundaries of what we call death metal by borrowing . And they've done it well. Shamelessly catchy, yet at the same time really complex. To lesser extent, same could be said about Morbus Chron. They may have a bit more traditional approach to progressive death metal (heh, "traditional progressive" sounds actually like an oxymoron, but I guess it really isn't), with a lot of Death influences, but I think they still have a sound of their own. It's a real shame they've also broken up, would've really loved to see them live. I was bitter as hell when At the Gates toured Europe with Morbus Chron and Triptykon, but in Finland they played with Rotten Sound (not a bad band, but I've seen them "a few" times).

I love Tribulation and Morbus Chron, well not the MC debut that much. But I feel that Sweven and The Children Of The Night will be classics after some time passes, they are just brilliant!

Yeah! I love Tribulation, although they seem to be wanting to change it up each and every album, much to the dismay of lovers of old school Swedish death metal. I really got into "The Formulas of Death" last year. I think that one's better than last year's "Children of the Night", which is still a solid record. I did enjoy Morbus Chron's "Sweven". One of the bands that I feel is commonly associated or tossed in with these, while not being Swedish and instead American, is Horrendous. Decent stuff as well.
