Especially Tribulation has taken things quite far and I think they've really pushed the boundaries of what we call death metal by borrowing . And they've done it well. Shamelessly catchy, yet at the same time really complex. To lesser extent, same could be said about Morbus Chron. They may have a bit more traditional approach to progressive death metal (heh, "traditional progressive" sounds actually like an oxymoron, but I guess it really isn't), with a lot of Death influences, but I think they still have a sound of their own. It's a real shame they've also broken up, would've really loved to see them live. I was bitter as hell when At the Gates toured Europe with Morbus Chron and Triptykon, but in Finland they played with Rotten Sound (not a bad band, but I've seen them "a few" times).

Yeah! I love Tribulation, although they seem to be wanting to change it up each and every album, much to the dismay of lovers of old school Swedish death metal. I really got into "The Formulas of Death" last year. I think that one's better than last year's "Children of the Night", which is still a solid record. I did enjoy Morbus Chron's "Sweven". One of the bands that I feel is commonly associated or tossed in with these, while not being Swedish and instead American, is Horrendous. Decent stuff as well.

Yeah, I actually thought about mentioning Horrendous in that post, but forgot. Maybe because of them not being Swedish and all :) Nevertheless, Ecdysis and Anareta are awesome records, I haven't really listened to the first one, at least not yet. I have to agree with you about Tribulation: While Children of the Night is also a really good album, I find The Formulas of Death a tad better.

For me Tribulation: TCotN is like Wildhoney was back in the day.
But Formulas is also a fantastic slbum.

Luckily I managed to see their reunion gig (or rather Mary Goore + 3) 2010 before they disbanded again. Doubt we'll see anything from them ever again. Ghost takes way too much Tobias's time and I suppose money is quite a bit better than with Repugnant as well. I like Ghost a lot as well though so it's not a complete loss.

Was it the gig at Nosturi with Watain? I saw them there, at least.

Yeah. That damned Watain. Had I stood one metre closer to stage I would've been covered in pig blood (they threw blood to the audience). Two of my friends weren't that lucky though. And guess me neither in the end as we had to drive to Lahti after the gig with those two smelly bastards on the front seats. Better yet, I had sleep right next to one of them. Even shower didn't take all the smell away... At least I got a nice gig memory. Big Grin

Oh, and now that you mentioned Tribulation I did listen to some tracks from their latest album a while ago after reading a lot of praises about it. Actually sounded really good. I should probably give them a better listen later. Then again I don't know if I should as if it turns out great I might crack at some point and end up buying it. I've wasted way too much money already lately...

Tribulation's last was far and away one of my favorites from last year, but I'd be hard pressed to call it death metal.

Yeah, totally agree with that sentiment. "The Horror" was definitely death metal, but their last few offerings dwell somewhere between death and black with some psychedelic influences. They also seem to be decreasingly "extreme metal" at the same time, replacing it by smearing on some extra gothic each release. Either way, also one of my favorites of last year!

Heh, I knew someone would say this :) Well, yeah, you could be right, but as I stated before, I still think they have their roots in death metal and show it. I find their death metal influences to be quite obvious and the whole atmosphere of the music has a death's feeling to it, so I wouldn't blame anyone for calling them for example "progressive death metal".

yeah Tribulation's brand of metal is closer to that of mid-era Tiamat, closer to what they used to call "dark metal" back in the day. And it is awesome.
black vinyl can always wait.

Yeah I realize the records previous to Children of the Night are death metal, but I think they have exited that league. I could imagine them pushing more towards this direction as CotN seemed to be a pretty good hit for them. Terrific album! I was in a bidding war against Century Media and a bunch of other labels on that one, I even offered a damn high price for it, that's how much I like it. But Century Media's machinery and track record won out - nbd!
