the last album was some of the finest metal I've heard in years, it will definitely appeal to fans of Deathspell Omega (who I also felt were closer musically to a post-Gorguts evolution of death metal than any kind of black metal). This release takes it to a new weid but is definitely interesting and unique
 One of the drummers is kind of a beast in contemporary jazz, doing a lot with some Zorn related projects. I first heard him on the Abraxas CD and then saw/heard him perform some super heavy sets with Secret Chiefs 3 before coming across his metal work.

This band will be a real treat for some, features a few members of Pyrrhon

Man... Zorn is so prolific that it's hard to say, depends what you're into. My first exposure was Painkiller's "Guts of a Virgin", which is basically horrible grindcore with saxophones (Mick Harris from old Napalm Death/Scorn on drums, Bill Laswell on bass). Painkiller started bringi dub into the mix and did one album which remains a personal favourite, although I never listen to it. the album is called "Execution Ground" , it's pretty special if you're into deep jazz, dub, and heaviness.
 Most of my favourite Zorn comes from his Masada compositions and are often played by others (Check out "Orobas" by Koby Israelite from the Book of Angels series for a very interesting mixture based on his Masada work, also SC3's "Xaphan" from the series and "Abraxas", which features the mentioned drummer). Electric Masada do it well and get pretty heavy at times, Bar Kokhba can be sublime. 
For nice music then "Mount Analogue" and "The Gnostic Preludes" are some of my favourite recent-ish releases, and more recently he's had some good music recorded with a base trio of John Medeski, Matt Hollenberg (of the unique extreme metal masters Cleric), and Kenny Grohowski (Imperial Triumphant, Secret Chiefs 3 etc). This latter project is some of his most "Metal" but I only heard the first album, "Simulacrum" and apparently the series keeps improving (with other musicians such as Mr. Bungle's Tevor Dunn). I don't actually follow Zorn too closely but have a big collection and his diversity is worth exploring over time. Naked City could be essential and their later albums were much more mature. Too much Zorn, too little time. just don't be put off by what you don't like because there is a whole universe under his name.

Keep exploring Secret Chiefs 3 also. If you ever get a chance live then check it out, the best gigs I ever attended were the various versions of SC3, and with Kenny G they get super heavy! Hopefully Spruance will finish and release a Holy Vehm album one day and we'll get some Pythagorean death metal treats from a hidden master :

and as they were mentioned, if ANYONE hasn't heard Cleric then find "Regressions". It isn't really death metal but it is a total masterpiece of unique and weird eso-tech face grinding. The vocals put me off for years but I bought the CD and forced a a listen and somce then it remains one of my most respected albums of all time (they are also recording an album of Masada compositions).

as I'm reminded.. old Holy Vehm this may not appeal to many but the new stuff will be immense. these recordings features John Marryman of Cephalic Carnage on drums and the main guy from Unhuman doing vocals, all else is Trey Spruance, the composer. These tracks make more sense within the context of the "Book".

Holy vehm is fantastic. A really dynamic sense of aggression. Does anyone know if there will be a full Holy Vehm album coming any time soon? I recall Trey Spruance saying there would years ago, just not sure if I missed any news.

If Mr. Spruance stays alive then it will come out eventually, when the stars are right. I saw some Kenny G blog posts a couple of years ago saying he'd been recording drums for a lot of new Holy Vehm stuff, including one with a 9 minute drum solo, a track based on the writings of L. Ron Hubbard.. Trey said an album was almost complete in 2009 or something, but anyone familiar with him learns to never expect punctuality. I think there will be a little Vehm when we finally hear Book of Souls: Folio B, the little shadow tracks/radio things on Folio A felt like Vehm trying to come through and Folio B was said to be darker (and to be released in the autumn of 2013). It will all be worth the waiting and it will blow away at least 99% of today's death metal.

I don't think we'll have any Merryman on the new stuff, apparently a main reason Holy Vehm was held up was that Spruance was waiting to get the appropriate drummer for the recordings. It will mostly be Kenny Grohowski, he is the guy who wrote about recording the solo. maybe a little bit of Peijman Kouretchien, maybe a bit of Merryman, but if it's all Kenny G I'm still pleased, he's one of the finest drummers around for sure but still not well know.
