Really looking forward to all the arguments about what is tr00 black metal! Or not. Seriously though, probably every thread related to black metal in internet's history has at one point regressed into an idiotic quarrel, but let's make this one an exception! After all, black metal is one of the most intriguing forms of music, in good and bad. It has this aura around it, which is rarely found in other genres. In some way, I can agree with the sentiment that black metal isn't merely music. I think you really have to have true passion, an inner flame in order to create such music.

With that said, music! 2015 was a great year for black metal, as for example Mgla (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BqGgqyfLCs), Akhlys (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY3_rkfZXC0) and Regarde Les Hommes Tomber (though a bit on the post-metal/sludge side, still in my mind black enough for sure https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EJQDCBEOM0) pulled out awesome albums. I actually consider Mgla's "Exercises in Futility" a modern classic, clearly one of the best, if not the best album of 2010s. I guess only time will tell. I usually find Finnish black metal to be kind of basic and boring, with a few exceptions like Ride for Revenge and Rahu, but even that scene caught me by surprise last year with Hämys' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj72RsK0dpQ) and Kyy's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlI901N2OJo) new releases.

Don't know if anyone's actually interested, but here's some other black metal acts I've been enjoying lately : )

Outre - Ghost Chants went far under the radar for black metal. An amazing album, Deathspell Omega-like but not a DsO-worship band.

In complete agreement about Mgla's latest. Convinced it will go down as a stone cold classic. The other standouts for me last year in the BM field were those by Antlers and Satanic Warmaster.

I didn't think Outre's album went so under the radar, I heard a lot of talk about it!

I picked up those Regarde les Hommes Tomber earlier this year. Signed Akhlys. And caught Negative Plane live end of last year. Have to admit I'm not as into the Negative Plane recorded stuff but they were fucking AWESOME live - one of my favorite performances at the Nidrosian Black Mass.

Damn, would really like to see them live as well, I love Nameless Void's guitarwork. And I'm a bit jealous about the whole Nidrosian Black Mass, a killer lineup indeed.

Ah, I feel so stupid for not going to NBM... that lineup was amazing and it's not even an hour away from where I live.

Some of my favorites last year:

A Forest of Stars — Beware The Sword You Cannot See - my favorite black metal related release of last year
Misþyrming — Söngvar elds og óreiðu - supreme Icelandic black metal
Atrorum — structurae - wacky German avant-garde black metal
Porta Nigra — Kaiserschnitt decadent German avant-garde black metal
Lychgate — An Antidote for the Glass Pill avant-garde black + organs
Dragged Into Sunlight / Gnaw Their Tongues — N.V. concentrated evil?
Abyssion — Luonnon harmonia ja vihreä liekki - psychedelic black metal from the Finnish Wastement collective, sharing (live?) members with notable artists Oranssi Pazuzu and Dark Buddha Rising

Mgla gets a lot of praise, and while I do enjoy them a lot live, I always seem to end up finding their songs fall short when listening to their actual records.

I'll be honest and say that there's something missing in Mgła for me as well.

Mgła - Exercises in Futility is a fantastic straight-up BM record, but yeah, there's nothing that separates it from other BM stuff. It's just written really well.

Nothing missing in the new Mgla, it's a fantastic record. The older ones are missing something, I don't know what...

Edit. Now I'll of course get some shit for dissing the rest of their catalogue.
