I find Kendrick Lamar interesting  though.

I cannot get into a lot of older stuff because I find the instrumentals to be super lacking, but I haven't checked out all of them yet. You should try Czarface.

If you find Kendrick Lamar interesting, check out the album Sour Soul by Ghostface Killah. The instrumentals are done by this experimental jazz group BADBADNOTGOOD.

ghostface killah is wtc, so i have the album on  watchlist. will take a listen on appke if they have it :Smilehanks for the recomendations.

Nd now i have. Its quite good and i really also like Badbadnot good. There 3rd album is quite good. Now listening to BBNG 2 Smile
Will there be a vinyl release?

So... I guess rap/hip-hop is to blame for getting me into metal in the first place.

Late 80's I was into stuff like Run DMC, MC Hammer, Ya Kid K, Bobby Brown. Bobby Browns "Don't Be Cruel" remains one of my fave albums ever. Also, if you want to find some under-appreciated but easily available tunes, check the Rocky V soundtrack and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989) soundtrack, both good fun.

I was aware of Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Motorhead et al, but it wasn't really until Ice-T did the "Bodycount" demo on his 1991 album "Original Gangster" that I paid more attention to rock and metal. The track "Midnight" from the same album saw Ice-T sampling "Black Sabbath" (the song, and THAT riff), which further cemented my interest in guitar oriented sounds.

By then, I'd moved on to secondary school ("high school" in American English), and spent a bit more time discovering these rock bands that had influenced Ice-T... then started hanging out with kids who introduced me to Skid Row, The Almighty, Megadeth et al. A couple of years later (and having moved on to "harder drugs" such as Pantera and Sepultura), Bodycount toured the UK with some bunch of Scousers called Carcass. I figured I'd check 'em out, and FUCK! I loved it. So '93 was spent discovering Carcass, Morbid Angel and the rest of the Earache catalogue, then '94 was the year of Emperor and Cradle Of Filth (oh, and Slayer and Machine Head touring together!!!), '95 I delved more into death and black metal, and I've not looked back since.

Hip-Hop and rap in metal? Rage Against The Machine were so good. All that nu-metal bollocks though, please, what utter nonsense. RATM, Bodycount, RHCP, and Faith No More beat all those bands to it, and the "Judgement Night" soundtrack cemented that. Dub War/Skindred aside,(caveat; In My Personal Opinion) no one else has produced any noteworthy crossover since. Okay, maybe one *mild* exception; people rag on Disturbed a lot... I tip my hat to them for having their own recognisable "syncopated" sound, indirectly influenced by rap.

Not really interested in the genre these days, but I appreciate the classics. Love Massive Attack... not sure if I'd throw them in with hip-hop and rap though.

So, yeah. Ice-T got me into metal.

Shit, nearly forgot... my first LP ever was Salt N' Pepa - "A Salt With A Deadly Pepa".

And my first record ever was Liverpool FC - "Anfield Rap" on 7". But we don't talk about that. :-p

Nice! I grew up as one of those "Rap? More like CRAP!!! It's not even music." Then my senior year in high school (four years ago) I found these two mix tapes by the hip hop duo Das Racist and eventually came onto it. Then, after finding out hip hop wasn't trash, I started looking into the modern underground stuff and yeah... Now I like it practically as much as metal.

Yeah, you can't spell crap without rap, etc, etc. If I'm being honest, I don't think I'll ever be able to get into rap or hiphop again. Sure, some stuff is catchy, but I don't like that there's so much emphasis on the lyrical content and vocals (like with most mainstream music), which is, more often than not, very straightforward and thus off-putting to me. Just like I probably won't get into melodeath again; it's just something that doesn't resonate with me any more.

Believe me, I'm the exact same way. When I listen to rap I pay much more attention to the production and how the MC's voice fits with it. And also I look for variation in the rhythm of their voice, etc. I'm pretty picky with rap, and a good portion of it is boring to me, so I'd maybe suggest you check out some of the albums I've been flaunting around in this thread! Experimental hip hop has gone up in my favorite genre list very quick.

So, I gave Kendrick Lamar's "good kid, m.A.A.d city" a bunch of spins and I thought there was something to it. He comes across as a sensible person through his lyrics, not glorifying his background but still being proud of it. I'm not sure as to how much I really like it at this point, but I'll definitely listen again.

And I kinda feel stupid for making that statement. I'm really digging Death Grips. The energy/aggression is great. I suppose there's gems to find in each genre. I always thought certain genres just weren't conducive to great music, mainly because of the stereotypes. But when I think about it, I don't really dig the stereotypes of genres I enjoy anyway. I always prefer the outliers; the ones that are actually doing something differently. It's the same way with Death Grips.
