Definitely check out Ikuinen Kaamos. Really really solid band and I kind of hoped they would pick up the Opeth-esque torch as Opeth moved away. But they didn't.

Their first album has a really interesting concept to it too. If i recall it's about an old man reflecting on his life, but specifically the fact that he killed his family (I think?).

And come on, that cover, my god it would look awesome as an LP. I'd stare at that all effing day!

Speaking of Ikuinen Kaamos, Opeth etc. In Mourning was one of the bands I often saw compared to these projects. Proggy melodeath. Then there's In Vain and their avant-garde, progressive black/death metal. Both bands used to be some of my favorites. Still haven't seen either live, but that would be nice. In Mourning has a new album coming out in a week. Then since we're talking progressive melodeath-ish metal, I guess I'd add Disillusion as well. They recently became active again; doing some gigs and apparently recording a new album.

In Mourning - Colossus
In Vain - Dark Prophets, Black Hearts
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor

Straying pretty far from the realm of black metal here. So, I guess I'll finish it with the Opeth of black metal!

Seeing these guys live last week reaffirmed my love for them.

In Vain are great. Loved their first and third album. Second didn't do much. Disillusion's Back To Times of Splendour was solid, but I didn't like the one that came after it. In Mourning I keep on trying to get into but haven't quite just yet.

In Vain are definitely under-appreciated. I love their first two, but I've been slow to check out the third. In Mourning are also great, I'm very excited for their new one to come out. Disillusion certainly threw everyone a curve ball with their sophomore album, but I enjoyed it. I wish they were more active.

A bit back in time to display a local, now defunct, band :

Their drummer was at least on one Blood red throne album too.
I saw them live in Bergen, Trondheim and in their hometown.
Probably they appeared much to late have any kind of 'break'.

You haven't checked out Aenigma yet? You're in for a treat. I rank it easily as In Vain's best album

This sounded rather interesting. Reminded me of something, but can't quite put my finger on it.

If you remember, let me know! I find their style to be very unique so anything similar to it would be good to have.

Ænigma is probably In Vain's best, yeah. Although I really did enjoy all of their stuff, the demo and EP as well.
